Tearfund USA is a Christian nonprofit, working globally to end poverty and injustice, and to restore dignity and hope in the world’s poorest communities.
We help communities overcome the worst effects of poverty and disasters – we believe that the same people who face these issues, also have the best idea as to how they can overcome them.
Tearfund works alongside local churches and other locally-based organisations in over 50 countries to help people realize their plans for a better future.
In 50 years we’ve seen millions of lives restored and we won’t stop until poverty stops. Together there’s more we can do.
You can help us transform the lives of families around the world.
Tearfund USA was launched in May 2018 to craft and deliver a US expression of Tearfund’s global vision for change. Tearfund began in the UK but now operates through partners and affiliates in over 50 of the poorest countries. It has developed distinctive programs in disaster relief, advocacy and development.
Building on this reputation and a network of more than 100,000 local churches worldwide, Tearfund USA aims to energize and mobilize US Christians to be generous and take action alongside people living in poverty. President and CEO Sonia Patterson says: “We take our prompt from the Bible where justice and compassion were central to Jesus’ ministry. We want to live as Jesus’ authentic followers, putting our faith in action through prayer, through practical help and by speaking out on behalf of those in the greatest need.”
Tearfund USA has received its formal 501(c)(3) status and is in the process of mobilizing an effective staff and board team, as it works to form a strong network of supporters and church partners. It is looking to scale up Tearfund’s remarkable church and community transformation (CCT) programs. Working with and through the local church is part of God’s plan to redeem the world. When there is both spiritual and material transformation, there can be life in all its fullness as Jesus promised.
Tearfund USA will also be joining with American Christians who see the connection between poverty and broken relationships, inspiring the church to make a difference in a world where injustice, violence and conflict are rampant. It is only with sustainable economic and environmental solutions that relief and development can take root, ensuring individuals, families and whole communities are transformed for the long term.
Clive Mather, Board Chair, is passionate about what Tearfund USA can achieve: “In a world where there is so much suffering, there is also so much opportunity to bring God’s love to shine in the darkness. Tearfund USA is gearing up to make a lasting impact. On the one hand we are a member of the Tearfund worldwide family, able to draw on its deep expertise and decades of experience. On the other we can bring fresh ideas and the dynamic energy of the US churches and Christian organizations. These are exciting times!”
