Tearfund has long engaged in advocacy, making sure the marginalized have their voices heard on the challenges and issues affecting them. In countries across the world, specifically in the global south, we have influenced the church and government at all levels to change systems and policies that have previously neglected those on the margins.
To break systems of injustice, we know the work of advocacy is needed...and it is needed now more than ever.
Over the last several weeks, there has been a resounding call for Christians to join the fight against injustice. If the church is to see real change, we must begin using our voices. We must be willing to examine our mindsets and actions and pinpoint the root causes and problems associated with injustice.
Injustice is a complex issue but that shouldn’t stop us from taking the first steps toward change. Here are 3 simple ways you can become an advocate for justice:
There are many ways to advocate. Maybe it’s a promise to organize an advocacy training for your church, writing a letter to your Congressman on a justice-related issue, or petitioning. Commit to speaking out whenever you see injustice. (Right now, we’re hoping to see justice for Julias, and you can get involved by signing the petition.)
What does the Bible have to say about systemic injustice, and what does he require of us in response? We're offering chapter 5 of Live Justly, "Justice and Advocacy", for free digital download. It provides a scriptural basis for the importance of advocacy and the role of government in pursuing justice. Grab yours here.
All are made in the image of God and it is His desire that all would flourish. But while systems of oppression continue to exist, this will not be possible. Prayer has the power to change us, change our communities, and change our world. Pray for those who have suffered the pain of oppression and injustice. Pray also that God’s mercy would reign in our hearts and in our world so that each and every human being’s worth would be recognized and honored.
Together, we can make our voices heard and challenge our leaders to stand up against flawed systems. Only then will we influence the decisions, policies, and practices of powerful decision-makers to address the underlying causes of injustice and seek a new way that allows all to flourish.
