Randy Newcomb’s guiding principle comes from the Old Testament prophet Micah’s admonition to “act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly.” This has served as a north star over the trajectory of his life. As Tearfund USA’s Board Chair, Randy believes the organization is positioned to challenge and inspire the US church to return to Micah’s core animating values.
Randy is a Senior Advisor at The Omidyar Group. The Omidyar Group is a diverse collection of global companies, organizations and initiatives each guided by its own approach, but all united by a common desire to catalyze social impact. As Senior Advisor Randy explores future trends, new and alternative thinking, and diverse points of view to address the challenges of the 21st century. He supports The Omidyar Group by weaving together networks of individuals and organizations working together towards a common purpose.
Previously, Randy was the founding President and CEO of Humanity United (HU) for fifteen years. Randy grew HU as a values-based organization dedicated to cultivating the conditions necessary to address intractable problems like violent conflict, atrocities, human exploitation, and modern slavery. During his tenure, Randy expanded HU’s work throughout the world, with programs in Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Indonesia, Liberia, Nepal, Malaysia, Mali, South Sudan, Sudan, and Thailand.
Prior to that, Randy was a Vice President of Omidyar Network, a philanthropic and social investment firm. He also served for 14 years as CEO of Golden Gate Community Inc., a social impact organization based in San Francisco.
Throughout all of these assignments Randy has been motivated by a sense of purpose that is anchored in justice and shaped by service. His deep sense of faith finds some of its greatest expression through service among the marginalized and the vulnerable in our communities. Randy notes, “we see the face of Jesus among the poor, the homeless, and the marginalized who struggle to simply eke out a living on a daily basis.”
Randy was a Fellow at the Center for Social Innovation at Stanford University and an International Development Fellow at the University of Bath, England. He holds a Doctor of Education from the University of San Francisco, a Master of Science in development economics from the University of Bath, a Master of Arts from Fuller Theological Seminary, an undergraduate degree from Northwest Nazarene University, and an honorary degree, Doctor of Laws, from the University of Bath.
Randy is a California native and lives with his wife, Pamela, in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco. They have an adult son, daughter, and son-in-law. In his free time Randy can be found with his wife hiking and biking in the Bay Area, determined to restore a 100+ year old Victorian house, or hopelessly trying to master the wind while sailing on the San Francisco bay.
