The recent eruption in Tonga of an undersea volcano, triggered a tsunami that has caused damage to infrastructure, contamination of water and damage and destruction to food crops in Tonga.

A large eruption of Hunga Tonga–Hunga Haʻapai volcano on January 15, 2022, has caused ash fall and triggered a tsunami.

Ashfall has likely contaminated water supplies, damaged or destroyed food crops, and affected air quality.

Communications and infrastructure have been damaged.
